Earthquake in Haiti: How You Can Help

| January 14, 2010 | 1 Comment

Haiti is still reeling from the 7.0 earthquake that struck near Port-au-Prince, the nation’s captial on Tuesday.  Experts believe the death toll will be in the tens of thousands.

Currently, the Presbyterian Church (USA) is responding to the disater through the work of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.  In addition to assessing the situation on the ground, there was also concern about the condition of mission workers Sharon Babe and Mark Hare

Also of concern are the status of two mission teams from New Jersey and Virginia who were in the country at the time of quake.

As we have seen the pictures of devastation, we all wonder what we can do to help those in deep distress.  We are asking churches in our Presbytery to consider doing the following:

  • $100,000 was released by PDA through the One Great Hour of Sharing offering to help.  However, much more aid will be needed in the coming days.  You can help by donating to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance online.
  • Congregations can send their donations to the Presbytery of the Twin Cities Area (please make the checks out to “Presbyterian Disaster Assistance” and Please reference PDA Account number DR000064):
    • Mail it to: Presbytery of the Twin Cities Area, 122 W. Franklin Ave., Suite 508, Minneapolis, MN 55404, attn. Haiti Relief.
    • You can also send your donations directly to PDA:Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
      Church Remittance Processing
      P.O. Box 643678
Pittsburgh, PA  15264-3678. Please reference PDA Account number DR000064.
  • If you or your congegration would like to help in ways other than donating money, Church World Service reports there is need for hygiene kits and baby kits.  Kits should be shipped to the following address:
    • CHURCH WORLD SERVICE
      Ferncliff Disaster Assistance Center
      1720 Ferncliff Road
      Little Rock, AR 72223

The presbytery would like to know if your church has people in Haiti right now, if your church is planning a trip to Haiti or taking part in some activity to help Haiti.  You may contact Dennis Sanders(888-323-4714 x11 or  communications@ptcaweb.org ).

For updates, please go to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance website (http://www.pcusa.org/pda/).  You can also sign up to PDA’s Rapid Information Network to recieve up-date-emails.  You can signup by going to:http://www.pcusa.org/subscriptions/.

Please keep the people of Haiti and the response workers in your prayers.
