Open House at Lake Nokomis
Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church, will host an open house on Wednesday, February 10 from 5-7pm.
The south Minneapolis congregation sees this event as a way to introduce themselves to their surrounding neighborhood and also as a way to show how an existing congregation can renew itself.
Lake Nokomis is on a transformational journey a “new way of being church.” That journey is threefold, focusing on meeting God through “creative worship, radical hospitality and Sabbath rest.”
“We’re hoping lots of folks will attend, to see who we are now and what we’re up to, and to help us continue to network and build relationships, collaborations and partnerships,” said pastor Kara Root in a recent email to the Presbytery.
Several changes are taking place at Lake Nokomis in its attempts to transformation itself. One of the major changes is establishing a “Day of Rest” two Sundays a month where no worship takes place. In its place, a contemplative worship service takes place the Saturday evening before the Day of Rest to ready people for Sabbath.
The open house will also show off other changes taking place including the ArtSpace Galley featuring Wicked Game, an interactive exhibit by local artist Mark Carlson and tour of their “Kid’s Club” space which will house a bi-monthly children’s program. The event will also include a long-standing tradition at Lake Nokomis, the Ham and Cherry Pie dinner which will begin at 5pm.
“We’ve changed when and how we meet for worship, opened our space to new groups and experiences, and are partnering in more ways in the community,” Root says. “We’re a church ‘in progress’, and would love to meet more of our neighbors and collaborate more with other churches, local artists and musicians, and community groups.”
