Seminar on Calvin at September Pre-Presbytery Workshop
The Presbytery of the Twin Cities Area is proud to welcome the Rev. Dr. Cynthia Rigby to led the pre-presbytery event at our September Presbytery meeting. The event starts at 2:30PM at Plymouth Presbyterian Church in Plymouth, MN on Tuesday September 14.
Rigby is a professor at Austin Theological Seminary in Austin, TX.
Rigby’s special area of interest is setting Reformed theologies in conversation with theologies of liberation, particularly feminist theologies.
Entitled “Calvin and the Wondrous Glory of God,” Professor Rigby describes the pre-Presbytery event with the following statement:
Calvin doesn’t always get the best press. He’ s often portrayed as a powerful person who evoked his understanding of the power of God in order to manipulate others. Pulitzer-prize winning novelist Marilynne Robinson comments that, because of his reputation, “the prohibition against reading Calvin is greater than it ever was against reading Karl Marx”!
In this session, we will work to redeem Calvin from the undeserved aspects of his reputation. We will try to understand more accurately who he was and what he contributed, theologically. Specifically, we will focus our attention on Calvin’s teaching about God’s sovereignty. In a nutshell, the main idea that will be explored is this: far from advancing God’s sovereignty as means to manipulate, Calvin wanted the people of God to know who God is so they could live their lives as players in “the theatre of God’s glory,” standing in “wonderment” of all God’s good gifts.
Please join us at 2:30 on September 14. The public is welcome. Plymouth Presbyterian Church is located at 3755 Dunkirk Lane North, Plymouth.
