Empowering Clergy as Crisis Counselors

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Urban Peacemakers

Sat. April 25th  2-5 PM

Many of our community stakeholders look to their faith community leaders for emotional and spiritual support when tragedy strikes.  Far too many of our brothers and sisters have endured the hardships of losing a loved one to violence without adequate emotional and spiritual support.   There is a significant gap between the average clergy person’s counseling training and the common perceptions/expectations in our communities.  Most seminarians only receive one course in pastoral care and counseling.  Crisis Counseling skills and the common risks factors associated with traumatic acts of violence are not usually in the seminary curriculum.

Agenda:

  • Crisis Counseling & Pastoral Counseling Rev. Howard Dotson
  • PTSD
  • Grief & Bereavement
  • Suicide Prevention
  • Coordination & referral process with other city & county agencies.

As urban pastors , we need continuing education if we are to serve as effective pastoral counseling resources in our communities.  By attending this consultation and remaining active in your own local law enforcement partnerships, you will be part of a growing community of faith leaders working together for peace and reconciliation in the Twin Cities.

St Paul Police Station:  Eastern District   Community Room

722 Payne Ave  55106 ( Corner of Payne and Minnehaha).

Ample Street Parking is available.

RSVP with Rev. Howard Dotson  hr_dotson@yahoo.com  (612) 702-3151

March 1 is SDOP Sunday

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

sdop-logowithtext-colorThe Presbyterian Church (USA) celebrates March 1, the first Sunday in Lent, as Self-Development of People Sunday.

Remember those fish boxes? A portion of the money collected in them — the One Great Hour of Sharing offering — goes to support SDOP. In 2008, more than $21,000 was distributed to organizations in the Presbytery of the Twin Cities Area, and all of this money originated with you.

What can you do on SDOP Sunday? Worship resources are available at http://www.pcusa.org/sdop/sdop-sunday.htm .

  • Have a children’s sermon where you let the children know where their fish box money is going.
  • Include SDOP in your pastoral prayer and individual prayers.
  • Pray for the recipients of the 2008 grants: Bong Kwatekeh, a social service agency for Liberian refugees and immigrants; Centro Campesino in Owatonna, and their programs with rural Minnesota Latino youth; the Gambian Association of Minnesota, and it literacy programs; the Halfway House for African Immigrants, which supports those recovering from addiction; Homeless Against Homelessness, and their support of homeless residents of the Twin Cities; and the Lao Veterans Association of Minnesota.
