Join women and men of Westminster for fellowship with Peg Chemberlin. Peg will talk about her work with the National Council of Churches and appointment to an advisory council to President Obama. She’ll share how she came to those positions and some of the joys and stresses she found. She’ll invite us to contemplate what, out of her experiences and ours, offers concern and hope for the role and future of the voice of the mainline churches in the public square.

The Rev. Canon Peg Chemberlin is the outgoing President of the National Council of Churches of Christ-USA. The NCC is comprised of the leadership of 38 member communions made up of more than 100,000 congregations and more than 45 million Christians in the United States. Chemberlin has been the executive director of the Minnesota Council of Churches for 16 years. She leads the council’s efforts to manifest the unity of the Body of Christ and to build the common good in the world.

In 2009 Chemberlin was appointed to President Obama’s first Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Chemberlin was ordained a deacon in the Moravian Church in 1982 and made a presbyter in 1994. She holds dual standing with the United Church of Christ. In 2008 she was made an honorary canon in the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota. She is the recipient of many awards including: the Bridge Builders award from the Islamic Resource Group, the Distinguished Alumni award from United Theological Seminary and the Governor’s Award for Women of Distinction. She is the former president of the National Association of Ecumenical and Interfaith Staff.

About the Symposium: For over 30 years, the Faith Nixon Fund has sponsored these annual Symposiums, presenting issues of crucial interest to women, children, the church and community.  We are blessed to use these funds to welcome Peg to the 2012 Faith Nixon Symposium.

The House of Hope Sunday Series: Sister Helen Prejean

Sister Helen Prejean is an anti-death penalty activist, the author of the nonfiction best-seller Dead Man Walking and the inspiration for the Academy Award-winning movie of the same name.

Sister Helen has been instrumental in sparking national dialogue on the death penalty. She travels around the world giving talks about her ministry. Since 1984, Sister Helen has divided her time between educating citizens about the death penalty and counseling individual death row prisoners. She has accompanied six men to their deaths. In doing so, she began to suspect that some of those executed were not guilty. This realization inspired her second book, The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions.

A question-and-answer opportunity will follow

Sister Helen’s presentation.

All Sunday series events take place in the Sanctuary at 2 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

Please invite your friends.

This event will be ASL interpreted.
